I dare ask, can anyone explain what is the difference between the two? I have always thought this was some type of philodendron myself. Is this a common mistake?

Yes, W1ld. There is a common confusion between Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) and Philodendron hederaceum (synonym: P. scandens.)

The most obvious defining characteristic is the pattern of variegation of Pothos.

Pothos don't have cataphylls, Philos do.

Pothos leaves look slightly folded in the middle, Philo leaves usually have a flat top surface.

The root nubs on Pothos are usually much fatter, stubby, rarely elongate aerially. Philo vines have thin, hair-like aerial roots and in high humidity will grow aerial roots that are long, thin, white, several inches long.

Pothos petioles have a groove in them. Philo petioles are round.

Philo leaves are usually distinctly heart-shaped. Pothos leaves barely approach heart-shape, more of an indented teardrop.
