I think it's a plant that lacks chlorophyll and looks like a mushroom. I forgot what they're called but they're pretty common in New England.

Maybe you're thinking of Indian Pipe, Monotropa uniflora. But the OP is in Lebanon and this looks like a fungus to me.

Yes- Indian Pipe, that's what I was thinking of. They look like mushrooms. I'd have to check on weather or not they live in Lebanon.

The first time I saw an Indian pipe, it was emerging from between a drift of dead leaves, and my first thought was that it was a plant which hadn't had enough sun to green up yet. I never thought it could be a mushroom.
