I've never broken a cocoon open to see what the inside looks like, but it kind of looks like a cocoon to me.

Looks like a Luna moth's cocoon, but I hope not!

Definitely a moth cocoon. Could be any number of large moths, e.g. luna moth, Cecropia, Polyphemus, etc. They're actually fun to bring inside and watch emerge.
