Water Plant

These small plants were floating in still water, in a ditch that stays wet year around. The individual plants had stems with alternate leaves that were shaped like a paddle. Leaves were sessile, opposite, to 0.4 inch long and 0.25 inch wide, with a central vein from the base, two veins split laterally above, and split again above that. The tip of the leaves had a flat spot or slight notch. Stems were glabrous, with very long, white roots from each node. When an individual plant was separated out for review, the average 10 inch length was mostly roots. The portion with leaves was only about 3 inches long. The roots did not appear to be attached to the ground. Any ideas on family or species?

Water starwort, Callitriche heterophylla?

Agree with Callitriche. Might want to run it through a key to confirm the species.

That's the right species. Deco, how did you know that one off the top of your head? It's not the kind of plant that most people would be familiar with. I'm impressed! Lycopus, thanks for the suggestion. We can also see C. peploides, nuttallii, and terrestris here, but those have leaves topping out to about 0.240 inch long. Thank you both for the help.
