Round, nut-like objects ~1.5cm in diameter found on ground

I've seen several small round objects in my new yard in Massachusetts. I'm attaching an image of 1 of them. It looks a bit like an acorn's nut, except that it has spots on one "end" and it's the wrong shade of green. I've found several of these under an area under oaks and maples. They are dense like acorn nuts. I have not tried opening any of them. Any idea what these things are?

It looks like oak gall.

Here is a link that might be useful: oak gall images

Aren't they cool? That's the Oak Apple gall. Cut one in half around the equator and there's a good chance that you can see the little larvae inside.

Cool! Thanks. How odd that I lived for 40 years in a yard with oaks but never saw one, now I've already seen 3 in a single season at my new location.

For fun you can make ink from them (after they are vacated).
