| If all goes well the picture is of a plant I dug out of a local ditch here in central Wisconsin. It has a vine like growth pattern, likely favors damp soil, is vigorous, and the plan is to use it as ground cover to hide some plumbing. The only problem is that I can not identify it. So... Any ideas?

| It looks a lot like crown vetch, which is a thing of nightmares - check at the link below. |

| I think you are both right, crown vetch. I was thinking some kind of wild pea plant, plus it is green enough it would seem to be nitrogen fixing. Most likely it was planted in the ditch for erosion control. I doubt I will have a spreading problem. A little too far north for the plant, plus the area around where I planted it is dry and frequently mowed. Thanks for the heads up... John |

| You're right, jemaas. Securigera varia is often found in the wild to, and beyone the Canadian border. The BONAP map shows its range in your area. However, it is listed as a species waif, which usually means that it won't reproduce without human intervention, or is expected to persist for just a few generations, and then disappear. |
