odd seedling in my garden

No idea what this might be.
Older leaves were suprisingly hard and leathery. I will eventually crush a tiny bit of a leaf to see if it smells like a Lauraceae, but I don't want to stress it yet. Nothing that resembles this is planted anywhere near this. And although all sorts of things self seed in my garden - yews, hemlocks, boxwoods, hollies, etc. - I've never seen a seedling that looks at all like this. Maybe there's something obvious I'm overlooking.
I suppose it could be a seedling of an evergreen Prunus. But I'm not aware of any Photineas near my house, for example.
