called 'thorny leaf' in vietnamese, this non-thorny plant is used for its beautiful green color in cooking a special rice cake wrapped in banana leaves. the dried, powdered leaves are added to the rice flour, imparting a beautiful black-green color with a leafy taste reminiscent of stinging nettle with cooked. |

| Perilla frutescens or "shiso" as it is in Japanese cuisine would be my first guess - though I'm not 100% sure given its looks. This summer I grew "Kinh Gioi" or Vietnamese Mint (Elsholtzia ciliata). It also looks similar but not exactly as well. I included a picture below from my gardens since the online pictures for it aren't very good. It has a lemony taste fresh. While I've dried a lot of it (especially the last of it before my killing frost last week), I haven't used it dry yet to see what that flavor is like. Compare and see what you think. These may get you on the right track. Let us know what you do find out! FataMorgana

| I think Perilla also has opposite leaves so cannot be the plant in question. Maybe it's a false nettle, Boehmeria sp. ? |
Here is a link that might be useful: Boehmeria

| thanks everybody. carol, i think you're right ~ it's a boehmeria nivea (ramie). fatamorgana, kinh gioi has the scent of lemon grass, and the photo shows leaves which are very toothed, very similar to shiso. |
