This is in the gardens at the Biltmore House, in Ashville, NC, near the greenhouse. Any ideas as to what it is?

It's Persian Shield, Strobilanthes dyeranus.

Here is a link that might be useful: Strobilanthes dyeranus

Hmmm...Does anyone know if it is invasive in habit here in Georgia? Zone 8A.

Probably not even winter hardy in zone 8 depending on if your soil freezes.

I've been growing this plant off-and-on for a couple decades and I planted several of these throughout the yard in the ground last year. Only a couple are still alive this year. A large pile of leaves over the plant once frost has knocked back the foliage could give you a chance wintering one in the ground, but wouldn't be reliable.

This plant is not hard to keep alive inside for winter, but it does tend to go semi-dormant, losing most of its' foliage, even in a sunny south window. But it will regrow very quickly once placed outside again for spring. It's also possible to keep stems in water for winter, which I've done many times.

This is one of the plants back from last year, shown with Coleus and Perilla 'Magilla'

Thanks all for the info. Sounds like it has some of the same requirements as some of the other plants I have. I'll give it a try.
