Highly doubt the Aruncus (which I grow myself in two species),
those leaves have a serrated edge and are broader, this is completely different with pointed lobate margins.

Not anything I know (here in Europe)

I missed the Kneiffii, their foliage is unique and similar to this fotograf.

Are your plants somewhat stressed to explain the mottled leaves (or is it just fall?)

Oh, I think you nailed it, Carol! Thank you for the link as well, it helped me to realize that a number of other plants I had thought were Astilbe are actually low-growing forms of goat's beard. Neat! Thanks again!

We are heading into fall, L. but this photo was taken back in mid summer. I did locate another online photo of one which has a similar molted appearance.
