Some type of rose, yes.

Definitely looks like a rose. Since you're in Zone 5, you might want to give it some winter protection, and see what you've got next spring. If you get blooms, but can't ID the plant, you could post photos to the Rose Forum.

Probably it got killed back after such a harsh winter, but it's clearly a survivor.

Thank you both! It's a bit of an odd place to put a rose, but I'll take it! Now to keep my 4 year-old and 16 month old away from it...

Those extra-thorny stems make me think it may be R. rugosaâ¦.
