Rather than a true lily (Lilium) it looks like something in the iris family, maybe Iris domestica/Belamcanda chinensis. This goes by the common name of blackberry lily so that could be the 'lily' aspect :-)

Should bloom in summer and likes full sun. Sometimes when plants are disturbed close to their bloom cycle, they may skip a season.

if you want to learn about iris... there is an iris forum ... but that would be for the sake of knowledge.. rather than getting a faster ID ...

one other thing ... depending on type .... the rhizomes prefer not to be buried .... actually sitting half on top of the soil .... see 8th pic at link ... and enjoy the rest of them ...

thanks to both of you. I did ck out the link. Should I replant now so that it is more shallow? I have one in a pot and one in the ground. They are both in sunny locations.

Does it actually have a rhizome (a thick, woody looking tuber)? Or does it have a normal looking root system? Iris domestica, the blackberry lily (which I really think this is) has just a thickened base at the root crown from which emerges a fibrous root system. It does not require shallow planting - plant at the same depth it is now.

Yes, there is a tuber. In fact the plant in the pot is already sending up another set of leaves. This plant doesn't seem to be planted as deep as the one in the bed.
the photo in your link appears to have almost a central stem and mine does not. the fan seems to come out of the tuber. thanks for your help.
