Polygonum/Smartweed

Pull them up before they go to seed.

They often grow along with field crops. We were trying to establish meadows this spring on former farm land ( in Europe). Polygonum popping up everywhere. Mowing helps, in the long run either mowing regularly or competion, covering the ground with plants.

Oh, jaynine, Polygonum is sooo 2012. New name, Persicaria for many of the Polygonums, including this one. I can't get used to it either. It'll be Polygonum until I die, let the next generation learn the new name.

i am not researching it...

but most of this stuff.. needs its seed to be on the soil surface to sprout in spring...

and that is why we mulch ... to bury the seed .. and then learn how to garden.. without pulling soil up thru the mulch...

you already lost this years battle.. because it went to seed ... there is always next year.. and next year.. kill it in spring .... before it even flowers ...

personally .. i use generic roundup on my 5 acres ...
