An unripe seedpod from some sort of magnolia?

When I first looked at the photograph, I thought that it looked like a rather dried out, sickly artichoke. But on reflection and after looking back through my photos at our magnolia seed pods, I think you're absolutely correct. It does look like a magnolia seed pod and you should be able to open it and see the seeds.

Did it fall off a tree or did you buy it in a store?

Also want to add, this looks most like our Southern Bay Magnolia, which has a fat pod full of red seeds. I'm looking for a better photo of the Southern Bay pod, which I know I have somewhere.. but you can Google southern bay magnolia seed pods and see some images. Either way, the seed pod you have looks a bit worse for the wear. Do you have a magnolia tree (or perhaps does your neighbor)?
