Mudflat Species

These plants were on a sandy mudflat adjacent to a slough. Active plants with new growth had drab green stems that were elliptic in cross section, and hollow (but not thin walled). They came to sharp points, and had fruit as shown in the photo. The new plants were 6 to 8 inches tall. There were also dried plants scattered about (maybe from this spring or early summer) that had stems to more than 24 inches tall. I'm hoping the detail is okay to suggest family or genus.

Juncus? There are about 20 species in AR, I didn't look at all of them, but it looks similar to torreyi... I could be totally off.

We have one here, Juncus ensifolius, that looks very similar, but obviously is separate.

Here is a link that might be useful: Juncus

Thanks nankeen. That looks like the right genus. I'll check the key this afternoon to see what characteristics I need to record next time for an ID. I never would have guessed there were so many species.

For keying out Juncus it would be best to collect a small sample that includes the culms, leaves, and fruit. A hand lens and a ruler will come in handy for examining the seeds.

Thanks lycopus. I already learned from the Wildflowers of Arkansas key that I had insufficient details, so dumped those photos. Juncus is a bit intimidating, but I do have the necessary tools if I decide to ID them. I'm just not sure, yet, that I love them enough to pursue. There have been 22 Juncus species recorded in this county alone, to date.
