Growing in New York, zone 5. This pic was taken early season as they were just getting started at a height of about 24". By late season they were towering above my head (easily 7 feet). Unfortunately missed the bloom period, but guessing it was mid to late summer. Also have a photo of the seed heads around somewhere if that is any help I'll try to find it. :) Thanks for your help!

Thank you both! I think this could be M. microcarpa or a hybrid of the two. My research found that the seed capsules of Small Fruited Plume Poppy contain only one seed vs. 4-6 seeds of M. cordata (this one is stated to be even more rhizomatous). I actually prefer to have to fight plants off than those you have to fight to keep living. :) So I may take my chances with this one.

I think I've written this before, but I treasure my plume poppy. It does invade a bit, but at least in my zone it's easy to make behave (shallow-rooted, easily pulled up; seedlings, when present, easilly hoed out). I have to say, I love virtually everything about it.

I agree with you Gary, they are really cool plants. Beautiful foliage color, & the seed pods are really beautiful in the late season. Can I ask you since you seem to have more knowledge, do you know when the seeds are produced and what a viable seed looks like? I'd like to start some but the pods on the plants I found didn't seem to contain any noticeable seeds. Wondering if this one is maybe a sterile hybrid or if I just didn't wait long enough for them to produce seed? I collected them in mid-Sept. Doing a search online turned up pics of a fairly hefty looking seed, but only on one site, so there is certainly the potential for labeling error. Thanks for your help!

WF, I wrote a reply but something went wrong (saying this in case two messages show up). I can't be of much help, because I've only noticed seedlings but not paid attention to the seeds themselves. I imagine they're very small, like most papavers. Yours may already have dropped seed, which will come up in the spring. Anyway, good luck with it. Gary
