Tree i.d.-Hickory?

I'm thinking this is closer to the hickory type. Any ideas? Thanks!

Looks rather like pokeweed Phytolacca americana to me. Did it come off a tree?

Definitely not a hickory. They have compound leaves.

Well, it looks like those leaves are simple and not compound, so it couldn't be a hickory. It's important to note that there will always be a bud in the axil of a leaf. That's how you can tell the difference between a leaf and a leaf-let that's actually part of a compound leaf.
