By George (Dave) I think you are right. Yes It does have a milky sap. Wow, what are the chances that one tiny little fig seed took root in my compost bin and gave me a tree. I have put lots of fig scraps from a friends tree so it makes sense. I thought it looked a bit like a fig but thought it so unlikely that I dismissed. Thank you, I will be bringing it into the garage for the winter.

Because they grow very easily from clippings for stems, branches.

In Z10, figs are reliably hardy. They are a fixture in almost every yard here. I'd go ahead and put it in the ground if that's your eventual goal. I think it would appreciate that much more than being in a pot in a garage, and the shorter, cooler (for whatever that means in Z10 - LOL!) days of winter are probably perfect for adjusting before the heat of summer comes back.

The milky sap contains latex, BTW. Causes serious misery for the unfortunate few who get a rash like poison ivy from getting that on their skin. If it gets in eyes, people end up in the ER.

If it grew from a cutting, it's probably a named variety.

If from seed, I don't know what you'd have exactly. Whether it would be a good performer ...fruit-wise.

Honestly I'd probably either grow one from cuttings of a known variety that is tasty, rather than spend the space on one from seed. Or just purchase one from a nursery. There are many, many varieties -- all with different flavors, levels of sweetness, ripening times, colors, etc.
