I received this plant after my grandma's funeral. I'm really not familiar with plants at all, and am worried it may be toxic to my cats, and that it belongs outside. I've uploaded the pictures from my phone to this image hosting site. Let me know if you need any better pictures!

It isn't listed as being particularly toxic to cats, nor is it listed as being safe. It is in the Dogbane family -- many plants in that family are poisonous to mammals including cats so I wouldn't take any chances. Mandevilla will not survive freezing temperatures, so it really can't be kept outside in fall/winter in Iowa.

But the good news is that as a Mandevilla in Iowa, when you move it in it will likely lose all its leaves. Less for the cats to chew. After the leaves drop, you can prune the vine down to nubbins. Even less for kitty to eat. Keep it very slightly damp. The plant, not the kitty. In Feb. you will start to see small green shoots. This is when it gets dicey, because these shoots are the new vines coming out from the fat roots. At this point they will need water and better light than the average home can provide. Got a sunroom? That is at least what the need. If kitty bothers plants, good luck. Some cats never bother any plants and some will try to eat anything in a pot.
