According to Wikipedia, it edible to humans. While not everything is edible across species, I would guess that it is not harmful to livestock. FataMorgana

The others are correct. The immature plant and the mature plant look different. Most pictures of plants at Wikipedia and many other sites feature mature plant pictures only. The article in the link (about half way down the page) includes images of both the mature and immature (rosette) forms of sow thistle. See what you think. FataMorgana

wow .. I took a sample to the master gardner who in turn took it to the university extension office and they said it was Mustard weed.. it doesn't look like pics of mustard weed either...
|
I don't know what 'mustard weed' might be. But your plant is not mustard. 3 long-time forum regulars have said it is almost certainly Sonchus oleraceus. How can we convince you?

I'd say let it grow so they could see for themselves but I'm not sure how hardy of an annual sow thistle is. Winter may eventually kill it off before the mature leaves. Anyways....see the link for an excellent line drawing of the leaves. Compare the large leaf in the back of the image to your plant. FataMorgana
