I live in central New York. This plant was in my garden. My mother in law pulled it out in June, saying it was a weed. I potted it and brought it in the house. It has been doing well and has recently flowered, so I was hoping someone could now help me identify it.

A Chelone, turtlehead, I believe, though I don't know which one.

A very special plant indeed!! Around here, they like moist areas, such as near streams. But I know people that grow them in a garden setting just fine, so I don't think a stream is required!

If it is still in the house, plant it outside so it can go dormant. It should be back in the spring.

I told my husband that we should put it outside. He said he's afraid the temperature difference from inside to out might shock the plant and kill it. He doesn't know much about gardening, but is he right to be afraid? What would happen if the plant stayed inside? Would it be safe to put the plant in our unheated attic or basement for the winter? If so, should we still water it? Or is outside our best bet all around?

Plant it outside. To ease the transition, you could bring it outside on milder days, and back in at night for a week or so before leaving it outside. You could even put it in your unheated attic/basement for a few days, again, to ease the transition. This is a plant that needs to be outdoors over winter.
