This species was growing in shallow water this morning. Some of the plants were fully submerged, most were just partially submerged with leaves floating on top, and a few were growing on the adjacent mudflat. None were growing more than a couple of inches from the water's edge. The plants were about 2 inches tall, glabrous, and with 5 to 8 leaves emerging directly from the base. Petioles were up to 2 inches long. Leaves had heart-shaped bases, and averaged 0.4 inch across.

Could be a kind of Dichondra.

Rugbyhukr, thanks. We do have Dichondra repens in this area (too much of it). It has more rounded and open leaf bases, and larger leaves with shorter petioles than the plant above. I'm now thinking this may be Ranunculus laxicaulis or R. pusillus. If so, I'll be able to ID it in March.
