Coleus

This is definitely coleus, and if the plant is coming from that one pot, looks like it has overtaken the pot! You can take cuttings of it and start a new plant.

Planted in the garden, it's an annual, but it can be kept going indefinitely indoors. It will die at the first hint of frost, so if you are in an area where you expect frost, either bring it in or take cuttings.

When it starts to get leggy, pinch it back, also pinch back the flower spikes (don't let it go to seed) and you'll have an attractive bushy plant in the garden or a house plant for the winter. We winter them over often by taking cuttings to grow in the house in winter and then put them back out in the garden in spring. They do need a bright sunny window, though and ample water, typical houseplant feeding. You can get them in amazing colors, leaf styles (feathery, ruffled, elephant, all different colors). You can buy flats of them in spring... even Walmart has them.

May have gotten too cold to save already.

Producing seeds has no bearing on its' potential future survival.

Thanks everyone! It's going to freeze for the first time pretty soon, so I'll get it inside. Is it hard to get cuttings of? I suppose not. =)

Haha! Never mind about about how easy they are the propagate. I just ran across something. I thought it would be really easy. I guess I was right!

Lark, they are incredibly easy to propagate. Just put a cutting in a class of water on a windowsill and the roots will develop. Transplant into a pot with potting soil when the roots are 3/4 inch long or so. When you take the cutting, cut a piece about 6 inches long and remove the lowest leaves from the stem, leaving 4-6 leaves on top if possible, You can also put them directly into soil but if you start in water first, it will sprout roots more quickly.
