That is a geranium. It needs sunlight. I have mine in front of a sunny window all winter then on the patio for the summer.
Water when the soil feels dry.
These are carefree plants. They appreciate a bit of fertilizer for flowers. I feed them African Violet fertilizer and they seem to do well.
You can break off a piece of stem, let it harden for a while then stick it in the dirt and have another plant.
Some people have them outside in partial shade all summer then dig them up, shake the dirt off the roots, hang them upside down in a cool dry cellar and repot in the spring. I have never done this but some people have great success.
These plants look great potted in tin cans. I have all my geraniums in tin cans instead of clay or plastic pots and they are glorious.
