Lonicera maackii?

I thought it looked like some sort of Lonicera also -- the stems more than the leaves, though (however, the only honeysuckles I've seen in person are L. japonica).

tanyuu, can you tell us if undamaged leaves are (relatively) long and pointed like the ones in ahelaumakani's link? Here's a clickable version of that link:

[Edited to add: Oh, yeah, and besides the L. japonica trying to take over the world, I planted a handsome L. sempervirens 'Major Wheeler' on the backyard fence for the hummers -- so I've certainly seen that honeysuckle in person also....]

Another possibility, if you are lucky, is Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, Coralberry, which might look like that after some heavy frosts.

I can't confirm the leaves, since this was something my nephew collected in his treks through the woods. However, it's very likely it's a type of honeysuckle, as I've seen some growing in the woods before here.

Some shrubby Loniceras and Symphoricarpos have very similar opposite leaves.
