A challenge for the experts.. seed ID

I recently received some seeds in a trade that came unlabeled and without contact info from the sender. Unfortunately, I can't recall what I traded for and don't want to have to play the guessing game when it comes to them needing some kind of pretreatment. So, I'm hoping that someone might be able to tell me what I have from these photos. The sender included some of the dried plant and seed pods so I'm hoping it may be enough to get a reasonably accurate determination.

Plant #1 (Photos #1): Appears to have had opposite simple, non-serrated leaves (attached by short petioles), 2 to 3 inches in length and about 1 inch wide. Stems were round and 12 to 16 inches in length (though could account for only a portion of the plant). Rounded seed pods varied in size and the largest contained 10 to 12 seeds shaped like orange slices and less than 1/8 inch wide and about 1/8 inch long.

Plant #2 (Photos #2-4): The dried remains of this plant had held the (yellow, red, green) leaf color at the upper most sections (see last picture). The seed capsules were elongated and ribbed with about ten of them topping each upright stem. When split open there were lines of compacted cylindrical seeds lodged securely inside. Seeds are light tan in color and only about 1/16 of an inch in length and width. The rounded thin, somewhat woody stems were covered in fine white hairs about 1/8 inch long. The outside of the bag was labeled "From Butterfly Garden".

I know it is a long shot, but thought I would give it a try and see if anyone was familiar with these. Thanks in advance for your input!

Seed pods from plant #2.

Plant #2 remnants of fall foliage.

Last note on this plant: also appears to be fairly compact in size judging by stems I would guess mature plant was no more than 24 inches tall.

Thanks everyone!

The first one might be some kind of Beardtongue, Penstemon sp.

The second one doesn't ring any bells with me.

Thanks weedwoman! I think you are on the right track with the first being in the snapdragon family based on the seed pod, however all the penstemon seeds I have collected to date (I have about ten varieties now) have had a distinct unpleasant odor to them and also usually look like large flat-sided grains of sand.

#1 struck me as a Spirea. Or a Lagerstroemia.

#2 the seeds themselves look lily-like, stacked in their tall column of thin seeds, as does the capsule. However the leaves very much look like they belong to a dicotyledonous plant. Maybe a Clarkia? They have capsules similar to that...

Thanks, nankeen! I agree the form of the 2nd plants seeds & pods is very much like a tiny lily, but yes the leaves are definitely from a dicotyledonous plant. I think I'm going to post the pics in the seed forum and see if anyone their is familiar with them. If not, I'll just have to start experimenting with germination techniques and see if I have any luck.
