Unusual tree for my area

I was on a bit of a hike today looking for herbs when I spotted this tree that I'm unfamiliar with. Given that it's mid November here in Western Pa., with the exception of the evergreens and a few oaks still holding leaves, the trees are barren of foliage....except for this. I spotted it from a distance and my curiosity was piqued by the "fruits" still clinging on the branches, along with the leaves.

Does anybody know what this tree is and if the seed pod looking buds are edible?
