These are the branches and foliage, along with the "fruit" on the branches.
I've spent a lot of years walking the woods of Pennsylvania and this is a first so I don't necessarily think it's a native to the region.

I know bark is important in ID'ing a tree so I took this. Thanks to you for responding.

I'd agree Ken with the exception that all the Maples in the area have dropped their leaves, including the Silver Maple.
It certainly does look like next years buds but the couple I picked up off the ground look more like seeds as opposed to leaf buds. That's why I called them fruits as opposed to nuts or buds.

Either a silver maple or a Freeman maple that has mostly silver maple characteristics.

Yep...checked some images and sure is a Silver Maple. Thanks Ken and bboy for the ID. I had one outside a house for years and it never looked like this. Slightly different variety I guess.

I have 2 silver maples left of the 5 the Previous Owners planted (couldn't cut them all down; need some shade till the new trees grow large enough). This fall, some of the branches have enlarged buds: what I assumed were next spring's flowers being a bit confused. There are still some leaves on the silvers and the red maple.

That's all I can offer. I'm in zone 7a, sandwiched between 6b (maybe 20 miles away, plus some closer mountaintops) and 7b (just a few miles away -- so close it breaks my heart).
