ID for this "plant", not a fern, or moss, but something else

I haven't a clue even what "family" this is. It is a in on spot on 5 acres, under heavy forested trees. No pines.

Formerly placed in the genus Lycopodium.

Thanks! That's it, down to where it grows. I'm near Brevard, NC. Odd they call it a moss. It's about 5=6" tall
