Hard to say with no leaves. Next time you may wish to check the ground around such leafless subjects. Leaves may have fallen and collected nearby.

That said, I'm going to guess young trees and some fast growing tree that is one of the early colonizers of an area. Maybe ash or box elder?

If a close up would show the leaf buds at the ends of the twigs that might help. Even without leaves some of the buds can be rather distinctive.

The branching habitus looks very much like some Acer (maple?) in my region that would be Acer platanoides.

Acer negundo is a pioneer species too, could that one be a candidate?

My first thought was an Acer too.

Thanks, all. I thought that Ash or Maple were most likely, and will see if I can get close enough in the spring to run the keys. That area sure is boggy; but, it seems that the areas most difficult to check are often those that hold the rarest species. And yes, Acer negundo is a relatively common species here.
