Unidentified Monster Plant

My husband thought he dug up and got rid of this beast but a few months later it came back bigger than ever. Now I'm hesitant to try and get rid of it again if it will just come back. Anyone know what it is? And how to successfully rid your garden of it? It seems to be invasive. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

It's actually a very desirable native plant. It's Leucothoe.

Top shown is surely more than a few months old. Perhaps you are confusing this choice, elegant garden shrub with another, more rank-growing plant that was in the vicinity.

Leucothoe is a big category! Although I don't disagree, that genus includes deciduous and evergreen, and varies quite a bit. OP, are there flowers at any point? What zone are you in?

if you want to kill something.. you use 100% roundup.. undiluted .. on every cut root end ... its a brush on/drip thing.. not sprayed ...

i would cut it at ground level.. and apply such using the handy applicator at the link ..... and every other month or so.. snip off any volunteers.. and put a drop or two of product on such.. until the roots understand you want it to die ..

Here is a link that might be useful: think dollar store.. precise application is the key.. not the brand name

Thank you everyone for identifying my mystery plant. Now that I know what it is I think I'll just move it (or at least try to move all of it) to my partial shade garden bed in the spring and use it as a much needed big foundation plant in an empty spot. Better than killing it don't ya think? Excited to see the flowers in May. My guess is that it wasn't getting enough sunlight to have flowers but I think it will in it's new home. Thanks again!

The clusters hang down from below the leaves.
