I've not really studied all the Mahonias and their hybrids to be able to ID them. I think you have to take a lot into consideration. Like their height, plant form, leaf structure and size, bloom time, etc., etc.

Regular M. bealei is naturalizing in woods. Not a pest quite yet, like it is in parts of the South.

My Mahonia x 'Charity' is blooming just like x 'Underway', and I have decided I also have M. bealei. The one with the tight brownish buds, whatever it is, will, likely, bloom this Spring, unless the buds are blasted. The 'Winter Sun' shown above, is blooming as mine tends to. Nothing like advertised, in climates that must be milder.
