Name That Plant!

What's this evergreen shrub?

I have lots of this beautiful, thorny evergreen shrub growing in the forested back edge of my property. I've never seen anything like it and after several online searches can't find its identity. I've never seen it in the wild, so I'm guessing that it may be an escaped ornamental. What do you think?

Ah thanks. After a little googling on Berberis I found Berberis julianae, aka Wintergreen Barberry. Looks like a perfect match.

Be sure to check descriptions, more than one barberry has been grown under that name - but only some of the stock will be the true item. Asian evergreen barberries is one of those groups like cotoneasters where there is a large number of species with some of them told apart from one another using more or less fine distinctions.

And material having been circulated in western cultivation for many years under the wrong names.
