Is this plant edible?

These are growing wild near water in Homosassa FL. Homosassa means 'where the wild peppers grow' but I can't find any information on whether they are really peppers or whether they are edible. The leaves don't look much like peppers and they grow more like a bush --maybe 3-4 feet tall.
