Thank you for the reply! I searched the plant you suggested, and I'm not quite sure if it is the same tree. The cupressas macrocarpa appears to have soft needles, whereas my tree is quite spiky. I have attached another photo for clarification.

It looks like a Juniperus, juniper.

It's likely you can put it outside permanently if you can get it to spring inside. Though it'd sure help if we had an id to be sure, but it does look like a form of juniper which are usually tremendously hardy.

a lot of these type of plants... are sold.. at the holiday season.. basically as disposable plants ...

just look at the pot to tree size comparison .. and understand... that its root mass.. as a tree.. which conifers are ... could be about twice the mass of what you see above ... and if that is possible.. understand.. whats going on.. inside that TINY pot ...

it was grown to perfection in a greenhouse ... and most of us.. do not have greenhouse like conditions.. thru most of winter ...

enjoy the heck out of it ... but if and when it starts getting ugly ... throw it away ... this is not an heirloom gift.. IMHO ...

and if by some crafty magic.. you get it to live until you can get it outside ... give it a go ... but dont forget to harden it off not only to temps .. but also full blistering sunshine... after having grown in the house all winter... it isnt going to be thrown into the full sun it needs w/o special care ...

Thanks everyone! I gave it my best shot, but it seems to be drying up already, I don't think we will make it through the winter.

yeah ... they are grown to perfection.. in perfect greenhouses ... humidity.. light.. water... etc ...

and not many of us.. have houses that can recreate such ...

so i would call it.. a SHOCK of some kind ... going from one to the other ...

it was fun though...
