Thanks so much! Does anyone know what type of azalea? It's growing under a pine tree and beside a hedge in deep shade, and it's about 18"-24" tall. The photo is from this summer. I don't think its evergreen unless it's dying, as the leaves appear to be dropping...

I can't help you with type - you'll probably have to do some investigating on double flowered azaleas. Back East we had azaleas galore (seemed they were deciduous and dropped their leaves). And here in the frigid climes, we can only grow the Northern Lights varieties which are deciduous - and the flowers are singles.

Very hardy shrubs - under a pine, beside a hedge in shade will suit what you've got there just fine.

planting under large.. established trees and shrubs.. usually has nothing to do with the plants ...

its all about proper planting.. and watering.. to get a transplant ESTABLISHED.. until it can compete with the monsters you are planting under ...

whats there is there ... it might not be as easy as just slapping some other things there.. and expecting success ...

Ken: I managed to establish a box/lonicera nitida hedge as well as a dwarf box contour planting in the heat of the dry season last summer. Drip irrigation is your friend! Having moved from a desert climate to the Seattle area, I feel on fairly firm ground on the watering front. My plant ID skills may be crap in this climate, but I'm fairly good at keeping things alive. I'll check out the shrub forum though. I'm about to pop another 30 azaleas in to stabilize a hillside, so I've been reading like a mad thing. :)
