What is this?

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knows what plant this is? The guy at the nursery told us it is from China but has no idea what it is called.

BTW the plant is with us in Malaysia.

I would say it's a rhododendron of some type

Probably a Vireya Rhododendron. They are semi-epiphytic and very tropical. Love 'em!

The photo shows the large number of anthers I would expect to see on a camellia.

I'm not familiar with Vireya rhododendrons, but photos of them online do not show anywhere near as many anthers as in the photo above.

the guy at the nursery said they are from cold China but have been 'made' to be able to survive in humid Malaysia. maybe tht's why they have so many anthers?

bboy, you are right. I knew I had seen that before! Camellia changii (syn: azalea).

it is a summer bloomer, I believe, and it is hoped it could be bred with japonicas or others to increase the bloom time.
