The link really says it all!

Targeting women! Isn't there a law against predation??
Oh! Since it is economic its ok?????

Welcome to the meat factory! Is this article sexist????

I am male and something just does not sound right here.
Like instead of women shouldn't it say consumers?

I don't know if you were on the forum when I village bought garden web from Spike . It was a mess .
I village is a site catering to women , that whole web site is sexist imho ..They did not mention Garden Web in the article but you can bet we are part of the package . Gin

No I was not a part of this forum when the first purchase
occurred though I know that some regulars quit when it happened. I asked one about it but she did not say.

I now realize what it is that turned me off about the
article. It is the idea of someone else (like parents!) trying to tell you who you are! In a way most advertising
is geared towards trying to tell you what you can become!
But in the process the illusion is busted when the product
just does not live up to advertized expectations simply because not every one has the same flesh!

Hopefully the purchasers will not reflect the attitude of
the writer of that article! Maybe that is whom it betrays??

Hopefully the forums will become better!!?

    oooooooh, that sucks!!!!

Sounds like they only bought them out purely for advertising revenues. Wonder if they ever think about providing valued services? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

"I wonder how all the guys who post here feel"

I didn't read the article but it sounds like the usual marketing toward women--like those "empowering" cable channels that are really just empowering women to be treated as a market segment obsessed with romance films, shoes and cosmetics. Guppy lips for all!

My browser shorcut goes directly to the GW forums page so I don't see any other i-village content and I use Foxfire so I don't see ads on the pages. How does this guy feel? Were it not for discussions of this sort I wouldn't even know this was part of a women's site.

I don't care what slant the spin doctors want to put on this site. I'm good with it as long as the forum stays free and the information stays accurate. The marketing onslought bounces harmlessly off of my internet chastity belt so I don't even know what they're selling. And hey, I like women; so I must be in the right place. -Brady

I'd just like to see them try and "target" me. I don't watch TV, except maybe once a month. I don't have cable. Gotta love Firefox, no ads. Gotta love internet radio, no ads. Gotta love digital phones, no one can find me.

I still look 20 (okay 30). Parenting issues? I forgot to have kids. Housework issues? I kicked out the resident slob. I don't need to lose weight. And I play with power tools (what? girls don't do that).

If they can find me, good like catching my attention.

But, hey Gin, interesting bit of trivia. My parrot quit laying back in October once Paul left. She hasn't laid a single egg since a day or two after he left. It's interesting that having him in the house might have made her hormonal. Prior to his leaving, she was laying about every 3 months. I'm interested to see if this trend continues.

Good news about the parrot not laying ,will be interesting to see if it continues .Maybe she had the hots for Paul !
I had to take mine to the Vet this past winter , he has a liver problem common with birds , gets meds. 2 times a day and no sunflower seed to much fat in it .He is doing fine .
I have Foxfire on this machine not on the other one , no ads here . Gin

gee wiz, GE which owns NBC which owns...etc... they weren't kidding when they said it'll all be just 2 or 3 companies that own everything in the end (can't just have one, then it wouldn't "capitalism" now would it?)...*sigh*...

I love it, laura, your little one may have had the hots for paul. i guess something had to. LOL.

sorry about yours, gin, so you have a vet that knows about birds? that's impressive.

    not affected by ads, myself.

l, you could have kept the power tool statement to yourself, thank-you-very-much...

After the discussion about computerized toys... how could we not have our minds in the gutter? lol, lol, lol!!!!!

After NBC bought the cable station Bravo, they stopped showing PBS-like programming and now seem to have a half a dozen reality tv-like shows that they broadcast ad nauseum. I hope things stay relatively unscathed here.

.. why cant we just be garden web again? its ridiculous why display ads about washers and dryers that have a super ultra delicate cycle to gardners.. when its obvious we like getting dirty...*sigh* it seems like each summer life gets a little bit more complicated

It's not just this site but the whole internet. It has sickened me to watch the devolution of the last 14 years as this wonderfully powerful tool created for the dissemination of information has become completely infected and bloated by money grubbers, porn peddlers and perverts. Even the original networks like IRC and USENET are riddled with cr@p. Personally, I'd go back to a 14,400 baud modem in a heartbeat if it would mean an end to all this extraineous junk. "Back in MY day...nyaaaaaah!" :)

And I don't like not being able to "save" threads like we used to! grrrrrrrrr A real pain in the keester, if you ask me. That "clippings" thing is fine as long as you want all your info tied to GW...and if it goes away??? Leave it alone for crying out loud. It worked fine loooong before ivillage showed up and "fixed" it. double grrrrrrrrr

Maggie...who's in bad need of an attitude adjustment.

We used to be able to save thread? How'd that work? Must have been a paying members thingy.

  • ladybug_ok

We used to be able, while reading a thread, to click on file in the browser header, then click "save as" (designating where we wanted to put it on our computers). Now it doesn't work that way...you have to right click the thread TITLE and then go thru the motions as before but selecting "save target as". I know, minor difference...but it's the principal of the thing. lol And someone had to show me how to work around it. All because somebody came up with the cute little idea of a clipboard on GW. Probably so they can send me more junk email or force feed ads. grrrrrrrrrr

I know it's my problem...but I really don't like changes to things when they're functioning just fine. Something to do with leaning new tricks???hehe

Well, shut my mouth!!!! It's back to working like it did before...what the????

    I should have known...soon as I speak up......oh well....
