What is your comfort food?

ntgerald

Pasta, stews, bread? The food your mother served when you were small? Something you suddenly find a hankering for, and would go to the other side of town for a plate/bowl of? The kind of food that comes to your mind one day when you were on sick leave, and find yourself thinking of as you lie in bed listlessly, waiting for the flu to subside?

Pierogis (homemade with farmers cheese and mint) and a butter sauce, baked macaroni and cheese, good beef strogonof, potato kugel, farmers cheese and rye toast,--in no particular order. The calories are worth it!!!

Any sinigang dish, but it has to be real sour and tangy, and spicy hot, and made from scratch.

Noodles and pasta, especially with seafood-based sauce.

Crabs and shrimp. Fish, fried or broiled just right.

Occasionally I yearn for dinuguan, lechon kawali, and ginisang monggo.

    Fern salad.

Oh, you had to go there didn't you!
You hit on my some of my hard-core comfort foods!
Since I spent some of my major formative years in Asia, particularly the Philippines, most of mine are probably similar. ;~)
I love Tamarind, by the way!
I used to buy those little sour/salty dried plums.
Really sort of gross, but I liked 'em.

    Dinuguan.
    Not so much! ;~)

As far as just comfort food, I love sticky Jasmine or Basmati rice! By its self or with a good sweet/spicy sauce.
I used to really love Buko Pie, Ube icecream, lumpia, halo-halo...Yum! :~)
I've made buko pie several times and need to learn how to do it with things that I can eat.

Since my allergy test results, many of my "traditional" comforts are not allowed. :~(
I used to just love pancakes and eggs, PB&J sandwiches and milk, any really good icecream, yogurt, pasta, pizza...!!
    Gone! :~(
I used to really like having a bowl of good cereal with cold milk, too!

The bright side is that I'm not getting sick to my stomach anymore and I've lost a lot of weight.
    Alergic reactions really suck!
Most of mine were delayed reactions(from hours to several days later) and hard to pin down.
Sometimes, it's a sort of cold comfort.
    I really miss these.

I'm going to have to find some sort of good chocolate that I can eat. I can't even have Carob.
I have major alergic issues with cane sugar
    I really miss chocolate!

Banana chips ! And oh yes, tandoori chicken ! Yum!
Wait, there's masala dosa too. And crisp, lacy appams with chicken stew. And mutton biriyani.... did you have to start this now? I'm trying to control my weight a bit here.

Good old fashioned Tuna Casserole!!! Mashed potatoes with gravy, any of the dishes made at Thanksgiving and Christmas!!! I LIVE for Thanksgiving and Christmas!! And my profile proves it! But I have been on a diet lately, and if I don't cheat, it works pretty good! Dang! Now I'm hungry!
    Scott, do you have Celiac?
    Patty

    Hi Patty!

I don't think that I have complete Celiac.
Or, at least not a worst case situation.
My dad does and I know that it's much worse than my issues.
So far, my gluten intolerance doesn't seem to cause permanent damage to my intestines.
It just makes me very sick, shaky...
The last time I had fast food, it took over a week to get over it. I can't quite throw off the side effects.
It never used to hit me so hard, although I did buy a lot of Pepto! ;~)

I could be under estimating it, but I'm not sure.

It just seems that everything that we eat, and I love, has something in it that I react very badly to.
Any type of wheat, oat or spelt hits me pretty hard.
Always has, I guess, and I've blamed it on other things.

I'm not a professional chef, but I did spend a lot of years learning how to cook like one.
Now, most of what I know, is useless.

Other than the gluten issue, virtually everything that is used in modern cooking makes me pretty sick.
Virtually all yeasts, both Baker's and Brewer's.
(I always wondered why beer made me so sick!)
Egg yolks of any kind. I asked about even unusual eggs!
    Sugar cane
Red grapes, which means red wine and rasins are out.
Virtually all cow milk and by-products.
I used to live on yogurt and my whey reactions are very high.

I hate purchased goat milk and cheese.
I actually grew up with goats and I can tell that they're milking the wrong ones.
It's not supposed to taste like they're milking the boys! ;~)

Family life has virtually always revolved around food.
I grew up with many foreign friends and spent time in many of those countries.
We ate everything and learned how to cook most of it.
I can still eat quite a bit of Asian food. I just have to be careful.
I used to make many of my own curry mixtures, homemade pizza, pastas and breads. etc.
I made the most incredible lemon curd.
It's all egg yolks and sugar! :~(
I'm not sure that I'm even going to pick berries this year.
I always pick the rose hips, for preserves, after the first frost, too.
Unless I learn how to make things w/o cane sugar or gluten,
pies, preserves, cobblers... are out of the question!
I'm pretty much eating, now, just to get by.
I never understood that attitude before.
How could you not just love all of the different tastes, spices and combinations.

I've just become too spooky about it now.
I've only been aware of it for three or four months and the change is really almost worth it.

My lifelong migraines are completely gone.
I can't remember a time since i was in gradeschool that I didn't have a headache of some kind simmering continually(24/7 for at least the last 30 years).
The migraines started later and eventually even Imitrex could only tone it down to a tolerable level without it going away.
I haven't had one in several months and they were becoming almost a weekly ordeal.
I've lost close to 40lbs and still dropping. :~)
Apparently, sugar, fat and starches have something to do with weight gain!;~)
    (And the taste of food!)

I did go clothes shopping the otherday...
    I actually enjoyed it. ;~)

I can't think about comfort food yet. That's something for the fall and winter months. Right now I'm gorging myself on all the fresh produce available at the farmers market. That stuff we survive on from the supermarket for most of the year is just so awful when compared to what we can eat now.

I swear for the summer months I could be a complete vegetarian and not think twice. Everyday it's salads and mangos and peppers and corn on the cob and green beans and snap peas and tomatoes and eggplant and spinach and cucumbers and pesto.

These things bring tears to my eyes they're so good.

WOW, Scott...sorry to hear it! I know how the Celiac is, my Dad has it. His was so bad that he nearly died before the doctors discovered what it was. He had to have blood transfusions. He was literally bleeding to death, internally.
But it sounds like you have more than mild Celiac (if that's what it is), possibly Candida? Just thinking about the yeasts, the wine, sugar, raisins, etc.
I admire you (and my Dad) for sticking to your guns and not eating what affects you. Me? I have irritable bowel, extreme migraines, reflux disease and ulcers, but does that stop me from eating (and gorging) myself? NO! That's why I have such a bad weight problem!
I'll give you some of my extra pounds, if you want! ;) It sounds like you could use them!
Oh! And GOAT MILK?!?!?! UGH! I grew up drinking that too! AWFUL!!!! I wouldn't give that stuff to my enemy! GROSS!!!
What about a total vegan diet? Well, except for the raisins, grapes, etc.
Hope you can figure out what this is, and that you're able to take control of it!

I'm fortunate that we do have a big garden with lots of fresh veggies.
We also raise our own pork, lamb and grass-feed beef.

It's such a relief to have so many life long problems gone or reduced, that I can tell myself that I really don't mind.;~)
I've been spooky about eating out for many, many years and fast foods were gone a very long time ago.
I'm glad to hear that you Dad is doing so well.
My Dad's health is so much better now!
He's having to donate blood, to drop his iron levels.
At least something that I guess I missed.
He has pretty severe Hemochromatosis and has to donate blood regularly to control it.
Although I did test negative for it, I'm not fully confident in the results.
Just too many things hit close to home and the Celiac thing doesn't cover all of it.

"I'll give you some of my extra pounds, if you want! ;)"

I've never been skinny and if I drop another 15-20lbs, I'll be virtually perfect for my body type.:~)
Most people were shocked when they found out my actual weight.
Few people can carry that and not look extremely obese.
I had friends that were at least 60lbs lighter than me and looked much heavier.

Growing up, our goat milk always tasted great.
We were careful to keep everything very clean, filter and chill it quickly.
    This puchased stuff IS awful.
Even the cheeses taste funky. What are these people doing with it. It really doesn't have to taste like that.

You really should give it some thought.
Although I do have other issues, My health is exponentially better!!
I wish that I had known this twenty years ago.

    Candida?

Are you suggesting that I have a yeast infection? ;~)

I read a little about it and will have to take a closer look later.

    Thanks!

Scott, don't mean to intrude, try some probiotics( like align) if that wil agree with you. If you had Candida running around your blood, you are not walking around like this, yo will be sick as a dog.
Sunita come on over for a good round of Masala Dosa!
    Love Jasmine and Basmati!

    ",don't mean to intrude,"

As long as you wash your hands and have latex gloves on
    I don't mind.
Although, you will have to buy me dinner later! ;~)

    Yum!!
I used to love Masala Dosa!!:~)

Indian and Asian foods are so much more my type of comfort food!
I ate far more of those styles of cuisine as a kid than I ever did "traditional Western' foods.
    (I still do!)
Years before I ever went overseas, very close friends of my family used to have us over for dinners.
They were from the Bombay area and everything was homemade.
Most of the staples that I have around here are still oriented around those foods.
I started toasting and mixing my own curries.
    Mortar and pestle...the whole works.
It's been a while since I've done that, but it was fun.

Watermelon? Yes indeedy! When I was a kid we used to sit in the yard on a picnic table and spit the seeds onto the back of our Chihuahua/Beagle mix named Julie. Kids those days...

Today I like to get about six cups of watermelon juice, 1 3/4 cups of buttermilk (or yogurt) and a shot of gin and a little salt. Whip that all up together and yum, yum, yum. Thanks to Crescent Dragonwagon. It's supposed to be a soup but I treat it like the refreshing beverage it really is.

    My comfort food, wine.

Ah Kevin, those are all the reasons I love living in Florida. Nothing like picking fresh mango, papaya, figs, peaches etc. off a tree. And OMG, I had no idea bananas could be so good, but only if they are homegrown. The neighbor's pineapple plants are producing and since I didn't get in on growing those this year, I'm not above begging. I even climbed one of my orange trees yesterday, cause the perfect orange was at the top. I spent the whole time I was mowing the front yard looking at it and I wanted it.

I also had no idea there were so many types of eggplant. Forget the purple stuff, the white and green are really yummy and not nearly as bitter.

I'm about to start my yearly garden in September. So I can have tomatoes, peppers, spinach and all that good stuff all winter. Eat your hearts out. I'm going to try artichokes, although a neighbor claims it's too humid here (but it's dry in winter and she can't grow orchids, albeit, that's about the only thing she can't grow).

I'll take my breast cancer over all those digestive issues any day. At least I can eat what I want and the cancer is long gone.
