antique ethnic brasswork

ntgerald

Upon reaching the city of Davao today, I went to the ethnic crafts stores where I browsed among the native woven artifacts, malong, batik, knives, long daggers etc made by ethnic minorities from the island of Mindanao and adjacent smaller islands. One of the things that caught my fancy is this antique brass container for betel nuts and buyo leaves, for the ancient practice of betel nut chewing to cleanse the mouth (eckÂstaining the whole oral mucosa red). The design is from muslim Mindanao, either Maranao or Maguindanao.
