Maxillaria tenuifolia roots

Orchid newbie here...about a week ago I posted about an orchid that was shipped to me through the mail, and that I'm concerned about. A few days ago I noticed that it has a new leaf coming, and I'm really happy about that. At the same time, though, I noticed that the only roots that seemed to have any green to it at all has now gone completely brown. I can't see any other roots that look viable right now. I'm attaching an image of the root that WAS alive - you can see it between my fingernails. Is this plant on it's way out?!?!? Is this a normal cycle? What should I be doing now to encourage it?

cut waterings in half, but raise the humidity a bit. being dryer should help to encourage new roots

Why not add to your original post where there were two answers? (and some questions).
Where are you in the USA?
What is the plant mounted on?
For what it is worth, Sydney Australia. Most of the plants i've seen are mounted on tree-fern and are bush-house subjects.
Average temperature
Winter 7 to 17C Daily range
Summer 17 to 27C Daily range
Extremes: Low 2C High 44C
Plant with bloom
Maxillaria tenuifolia
Plant on tree-fern mount, sorry about the quality.
Maxillaria tenuifolia 'Eve'
Plant is grown at the shaded end of this shadehouse. Dendrobium nobile conditions. Not my setup, but i cannot imagine the plant doing much during winter.
Nobile/Softcane Dendrobiums in bloom 2009
