Got this little orchid for 50 cents... What now?

It was on clearance at Lowes. :) It is a phalaenopsis orchid. Should I take it out of this plastic thing and put it in the pot, or does it need something bigger? Cut the flower stem? What sort if soil/peat moss should I use?

other than dead flowers, it looks great.

1. It doesn't need repotting for at least another year provided you don't rot the roots by overwatering.

2. Cut the stem? Read here - http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/orchids/2003055125024188.html

3. Allow the moss to just about dry out but not completely before watering again, about once a week.

4. You can keep the opaque pot in the hard plastic pot but take the opaque pot (and plant) out when watering it. Allow the opaque pot to drain completely and then put it back in the hard plastic pot. Never let the plant sit in water

Awesome! Thanks for the info. How will I know when it needs to be repotted? Also, what is this bump under the flower?

That bump is the terminal end of the flower spike. With some yellow phalaenopsis, it may push out more flowers so you never cut them off but yours won't do that.

Repot when you have many roots growing outside of the pot.

Make sure the pot it's in has drainage. If not you can
poke holes in the bottom or heat the tip of a pick of some sort and melt holes. As tolumniamatt says, it doesn't need potting for a year or so. Don't worry, orchids aren't like other house plants, they like tight pots.
