propagating a phal piece

Hello,
I am an avid gardener but not knowledgeable about orchids. Did read the tag info and your FAQs. Basically I have a very healthy phal (not sure of the variety), approx 1 yr old, which is potted in an orchid mix. It was in bloom when given to me as a gift and this is it's next blooming. It has a stalk with 3 swelling buds and if you follow it back about 12 inches there are 3 leaves and 6 of what I think are aerial roots. Continue following the main stalk down another 12 inches and you are in the pot where a few more (larger) leaves are.
After it blooms, could I and should I remove the 2nd set of leaves/roots and make a new plant? I have a beautiful peice of driftwood collected on my last trip to Gulfport and could mount it there with an appropriate pad. Any info or advice you could give on whether or how to would be welcomed. I don't have a digital picture, sorry. And forgive if I don't have the proper names for the parts.

| It sounds like you have a Phalaenopsis keiki growing on the inflorescence. It also sounds like you have enough roots to separate it from the main plant. Yes you can mount it on driftwood. Is it fresh water or ocean driftwood? If from the sea shore area, the wood will have salt in it and have to be removed since salt would eventually harm the Phal. If from fresh water, a bleach soak and thorough drying to remove the bleach will do the trick. Brooke |
