Not a healthy root. Once an orchid root is broken you might as well cut the root at the break. To help orchid roots google and buy maxi-crop. It is Norwegian seaweed juice. It contains a natural chemical, humic said. It is a root stimulant. Good for every orchid every 2 weeks. And good for ALL plants.

I don't cut any green root. The root is alive and the part of the root which carries food and water is still active inside the vellum. I have plants with many broken roots and they branch off and continue growing.

You live in a warm climate and your plant should be fine.

If there were plenty of other good roots, I'd cut at the closest brown spot to the base. As much as anything to 'clean-up' the plant a bit.

It is still generating a little bit of energy, so it all depends on the overall health, IMO.

If it is short on roots then I'd leave it.

Thanks everyone. I cut it, and a couple of others like it on other plants, mostly for cosmetic reasons. All of the plants have tons of healthy roots. They should be ok.

I'm with Jane you should have left it. I've had many roots where the top was dead but the bottom was alive and growing so it was definitely doing its thing. And I can't tell you how many broken root like this I've had that were just fine.

If there are plenty of good roots I say cut it! with lots of roots the nutritional benefit of a broken root is insignificant. I can't say how many broken roots I've cut on plants with lots of roots. And they are all robust.

The emphasis is on 'lots of good roots.' If so, the loss of one root is no big thing.
