I just got two cattleyas at an orchid show, and they came in fir bark pieces. I can't tell how moist the fir bark is- I'm not used to working with it. It always feels dry to me, but I don't want to overwater. Can anyone help me figure out how to know when to water with fir bark?

Stick your finger down into the bark. Don't be afraid of hurting anything. Also, if the plant is showing some signs of growth - roots, new growths - just water until the water comes out the bottom of the pot. Then learn how to feel the weight of the pot when its wet. You can't hurt anything by watering. Jane

A good way to get used to watering fir bark is to water about every ten days in winter and spray the top of the pot every other day just enough so a lot of water isn't dripping into the center of the root system. In summer when it is hot, and especially when it is warm at night, you can worry a lot less about over-watering. Always keep them in a place where air can get into the bottom holes of the pot.
