My husband recently purchased two orchids from grocery store flower center. I just pulled them out of the vase to water and was horrified to see one had white 'stuff' inside the bark.... Yet the roots look healthy. I am a novice on growing orchids and need to know if this is something to ignore or do I need to repot??

Love your house! Your orchid is a dyed-blue Phalaenopsis Orchid. It will never bloom blue again. It will be white. Its hard to tell from the photo, but my guess is the plant has been kept too wet and underlit. I can't tell what it is planted in, but I might remove the plant carefully from the plastic pot and examine the roots and potting media. You don't necessarily need to disturb the roots, but just pull the plant out and pick away at the rotted media. If necessary, you could remove the media and flush the roots with water and repot. Place the plant in a bright window and only water when the media is almost dry. You can pick up some orchid mix at a garden center. Good luck, Jane

Hi Jane, Thanks sharing some good info here. I believe it could be a useful solution for us, especially when faced with similar situation.

Thanks Jane. So far, I've elected to just watch the plant for signs of decline. It's my guess that the media I was concerned about is not effecting the over all health of the orchid. It looks very healthy at this point. Thanks for the great info. :)

I have to assume that your orchid is growing in bark. Bark often carries harmless fungus spores and yours, in this case, have grown what is called mycelium, or, "snow mold". It is completely harmless to your orchid directly but can affect how the potting media holds moisture. The mycelium can somewhat allow a plant to dry out faster. Do you need to repot immediately? No. http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-mycelium.htm#slideshow

Enjoy the blooms, inspect more after they finish. Otherwise you may shorten the bloom time. Orchids are more tolorence to being messed with after blooming when the vegetative growth is occurring.

HOW do they dye flowers? Do they water with colored water?
RE: Fungus..mold???
| | |
In the case of my orchids, they were injected with dye.

My question is WHY? Dye, I mean. Orchids are beautiful just the way they come. I don't mean to criticize anyone. I just don't understand the point of changing what's already pretty much perfect.
