Costa Rican Orchid Tour

I live in Southern California and am looking for a Costa Rican Orchid tour, possibly through the jungle or back country. Has anyone gone on a tour like this or can recommend a travel agency that specializes in tours for gardeners?

I found a web site for Eco Tours that takes you on walks on the beaches in search of giant sea turtles and then you get to stay at a farm in the hills and participate in the chores.

Thanks,

Andrea

Hi
If seeing orchids is your main goal you'll definitely want to arrange a tour. Of the 1700 species I've found four on my own lol Of course there is also the problem that even if you do find them ,they are frequently 50 feet off the ground surrounded with hundreds of other species of plants. With 10,000 species of insects not to mention snakes spiders, scorpions and tree crabs not a good idea to climb trees ?? lol. Also there are so many other distractions monkeys giant lizards birds and butterflies of every color.waterfalls floodplains, tree fern forests and on and on lol.
BTW Get a GOOD guide. I asked about orchids and one showed me some cane Dends growing on a palm in front of the hotel lol.
May I suggest visiting Monte Verde, true montane rainforest accessible by bus!! Be sure to go on the the tour otherwise you'll miss 90 percent of what's there. gary

Hi Andrea,

In case you have not gone on your excursion yet...you might consider going to Panama instead and visiting Finca Dracula. What Gary says is true, seeing orchids like that can really be hit and miss. I recently read that this facilty has a wide variety of local species under cultivation and caters well to tourists looking to learn about orchids in their native habitat. It is like a conservation/propagation/research center. It sounds like a very professional, well run facility and the owner is very knowlegeable about the panamanian orchid flora. You might want to do a search and look into it. I think they also organize guided tours.
