Hi all! My mom is going to an orchid show and mentioned she could see if they have anything I want there for sale. I figured for sure I would ask about vanilla, but I have been thinking I want some cattleya/alliance orchids. I have several phals and they all do very well. I adore green and orange in orchids, but that is not a requirement. I see catts that I think are beautiful often enough in the purples and other colors. My problem is that I don't know them well enough to really narrow things down very well before this Saturday. Any suggestions for something which will do well inside? I can set them outside for the summer, but I don't think I have enough light as I don't get any direct sun on that side of my apartment. Inside, I can control the light. :) If possible, I'd love a fragrance. Thanks!

Tell your Mom to use her judgement, I have some lovely scented Catts but the chances of finding them at your show are small. There are plenty of others. Approx one-third of hybrids are scented and its best to let your (or in this case your mom's) nose be the judge. PS Don't bother with Vanilla. You will never succeed in getting it to flower in Arkansas. I can't grow it in this area of Brazil. It's strictly Amazon rainforest! Good luck.

Thanks! I think I'll end up having to do just that.

Stick with a cattleya. A vanilla plant orvine needs a greenhouse, and it needs a LOT of room to grow. An adult vine can wrap around the inside of a medium to large greenhouse twice before it matures enough to flower. If you have that kind of room, fine. Remember, in order to get a vanilla bean, you need to hand-pollinate the flowers (which last for only a day.)

In the cattleya alliance, I would recommend a mini-cattleya, they do come in orange but are not often fragrant. They are fairly common at orchid shows
