Granular clay medium.

Hi All,
I am new to orchids, however I have been doing hydro-culture with my houseplants for a while. My research on epephytic orchids points to a course partly water retentive substrate, such as pine park and pebbles. In my houseplants I use expanded clay pellets and coconut coir. The expanded clay pellets would seem to be the ideal substrate for many of the orchids commonly raised. They have good air circulation, keep the roots humid, and you could use a wick system with a reservoir, or go much lighter on the coconut coir on the bottom of the pot to help the nutrient solution to wick up to the plants roots.

Ain't Nature Grand!

Expanded clay pellets work very well for most orchids. Google First Rays for an in-depth explanation and a forum.

Nature is indeed grand!

Some orchids do well in coir but most would not. Some orchids like to be evenly watered but most would not.

The book from Ortho "All about orchids" available from Amazon or your local garden center will help you sort them out.

Welcome to the world of orchids.
