| So this is my first winter with a couple of deciduous dendrobiums. I have a dendrobium parishii and a dendrobium cucullatum. I have kept both of then pretty much dry over the winter with the exceptions of a few spritzes here and there. The parishii was kept colder (45-50F nights) than the cucullatum (55-60F night) as per the culture instructions I received. The pbulbs on both are looking pretty nice so I know they are still alive. But there are no buds on either. Over the weekend I have seen both plants being sold, by local growers, in bud. What gives? I was thinking I would see some activity in January. Now it is mid-February and there is nothing. :-( I suspect that I just need to be patient but I also want to make sure that I am not going to kill them waiting for buds. I also have a dendrobium kingianum, which received similar care to the parishii. No buds on it but it never seemed to stop growing either. Not sure what to make of that? Any insight/words of wisdom are welcomed. Thanks! |

| Did you read the long, ancient Den. kingianum thread down the page a bit. I suspect that what may be easy here might be difficult in some climates. A good starting point is to find the culture notes written by the late Wilford Neptune. He was a master at growing D. kingianum in a Northern Climate. |

| Ehanks Arthur. I have read the thread and Wilford Neptune's notes on the kingi. It received similar treatent to Neptune's suggestions in the fall and early winter. It was still growing in 35 degree temperatures. |

| You are in the same zone as me- and my parishii is not budding yet either. This is my first winter with it so I was also wondering. My den anosmum is blooming and my den Nestor is as well- but the Nestor I only picked up in December and it budded virtually the moment it dried out. My canes look fine and I have it high where it may or may not get a bit of mist. All leaves have been off of it for at least a month. I'm just hanging tight until I either see buds or growth. |

| Hello all, A week ago I got a present a white Dendrobium and it was full of flowers. After 3-4 days I noticed that some of the flowers were starting to get really dry and know after a week almost all of them died includind two leafs. I watered the plant in the first day but only by spraying it and after 2 days I watered it normal. I'm desperate, I don't know how to take care of it. I read on net that i should take care of it like a Phalaenopsis. I have 3 of those. I don't know what were the conditions that the plant lived before i got it. Please help!!!! |

| Gorgeous, the information you read on the net would be fine if your Dendrobium was a warm growing tropical type of Dendrobium but it is a nobile/softcane type that needs a warm summer and a cooler drier winter. The cooler drier winter is the problem, how much cooler and how much drier? The temptation on reading cultivation notes is to keep it too dry in winter and the other problem is how cool to keep it in winter. It is a beginner's orchid here, best grown outdoor's in the right spot in the garden. Average Annual Temperatures. Summer 17C.min 27C.max Winter 7C. min 17.C max Average Annual Rainfall 47 inches (Say 90cm) Driest time of year on Average late winter/spring. But heavy rainfall can fall any season 300 sunny days (on average) a year. See if you can find some complete cultivation notes on the net that relate to your climate in Romania |
