Why doesn't this Phal open Fully?

(Moved from Orchid Gallery post)

I have a large phal with one spike (out of three) that looks normal but none of its flowers will open fully. The other current and previous spikes' flowers all open completely. This spike is on its third rebloom and every flower opens to the exact same point. They last for months just like ones that open normally. They cannot be manually coaxed to flex the two unfurled petals.
I'm wondering if anyone knows what causes this. I'm not looking for guesses as they will not be of value, but for info from someone who has seen this and knows what causes this.
Please see attached photo. Thanks!

That cultivar is bred to bloom like that. Perfectly normal. Some people like it. I'm not a fan.

I've seen more and more of those showing up lately, I don't care for them either. I'd like to know if they are considered as some form of peloric. Granted I'm not the biggest fan of the pelorics but you have to look at those and say come on....

Here is a link showing a Phalaenopsis flower with peloric features which means that some features of the lip carry over on to the petals. That is the question....do the flowers on the spike(s) which opened normally have this feature?

Sometimes you see orchids with an abnormal flower or two and the rest are normal. Said orchid then flowers normally the next time.

I have never seen the condition you describe where all the flowers on one spike were badly distorted so i cannot even guess at the reason.

Here is a link that might be useful: Picture found on Flickr

arthurm, thanks for your response. The flowers that open normally on the other spikes do NOT have the peloric features shown in your photo; the flowers on the spike in question do however. After reading your post, I searched peloria on GW and found a link to a piece written by Alex Callis that states this:
"Peloria in orchids occurs when the petals take on the color and/or the shape of the lip, and may be found anywhere between two extremes.....The presence of peloria is genetic, but expression of peloria may be influenced by environmental changes or by being stressed. These are not always stable, and the plant may flower normally on the next inflorescence."

It had been suggested to me that the condition could be environmental, but that didn't make sense to me since the entire plant is subject to the same light, moisture, etc. If peloria is genetic, but not always or necessarily exhibited, I suppose it has a 'mild case' or deformed to a lesser degree than those who blooms are all abnormal.

The plant has produced a new plant that is spiking now; it will be interesting to see what form the flowers take. A second new plant has just begun too. What to do about them is for another post though! My preference is for all future inflorescence to bloom normally.
